Dean Murray

Kitchen and Logistics Coordinator

How/why did you get involved in FEAST?

I have always been passionate about cooking (and eating) food, I’ve worked in restaurants from the age of 16. Working in smaller restaurants, as well as large scale catering events, gave me an understanding of the scale of waste within the hospitality industry which led to a desire to combat food waste. I volunteered throughout university whenever I had the time, mostly for charities that tackle homelessness. Whilst on furlough during COVID lockdown, I was eager to volunteer with FEAST as much as I could. This led to taking on a full-time chef position in a FEAST kitchen. After a year in the kitchens, I then moved on to the role of Kitchens and Logistics Coordinator where I manage the day-to-day operations of all FEAST kitchens.

Anything FEAST is doing that you are particularly passionate about?

I love cooking or even just being present for any of the weekly community meals that FEAST delivers; using surplus ingredients to provide people with a nutritional meal whilst also building a sense of community. The meals we provide creates an opportunity for service users, staff members and volunteers to come together and build friendships. I relish in the opportunity to get to know so many different people and learn some things along the way.

Hobbies and interests outside of work?

Even though it’s been my profession, I’m still a passionate home cook - I love to try making new things and cooking for others. I’m from Liverpool and a big LFC fan (up the reds!). I also into books, comics, podcasts and live music.
